Director and photographer Matthew Donaldson’s technically ambitious images have a startling quality—pictures of handbags swinging amid suspended paint splashes read as exclamations.
He is currently best known for his immaculately observed and staged editorial stories with magazines including AnOther Magazine, Esquire, Mr Porter, Nowness, Telegraph Magazine, Vogue Russia, W, and Wallpaper and advertising for luxury brands Armani, David Morris, Google, Kvadrat, Loewe, Nike, Smythson, and Swarovski.
He’s a frequent contributor to Nowness and has an ongoing collaboration as the director for “Getting There”, a short documentary film series featuring Ed Ruscha, Yohji Yamamoto, Pascal Dangin, and Fernando Romero. He also is the Director for an In-Residence series featuring Barnaba Fornasetti, Jean Pagozzi, Ray Kappe, and Daniel Libeskind. He has recently directed campaigns for JCPenney, Target and Samsung.
