The creator and star of Bad Sisters and Catastrophe (Sharon Horgan) on making a series about middle-aged sex, love, and parenting: “She wants to have this valuable, creative, couldn’t-give-a-fuck kind of life, but she’s not there yet.”

Sharon Horgan had Youth in the back of her head for years. The queen of messy black comedies like Bad Sisters and Catastrophe, she has created female characters who screw up, screw around, grieve, and sometimes even murder a husband. But as Horgan approached 50, she dreamed of writing a series about the specific chaos of middle-aged womanhood: dealing with troubled teenage kids, elderly parents succumbing to dementia, and the specter of waning sexual appeal. “I wanted to look at all that through the lens of a divorced woman who feels that she has a very specific amount of time left to find happiness,” Horgan tells Vanity Fair. It’s like she feels an existential biological clock ticking, and “there’s a big alarm bell going off.”

The series, which premieres on HBO September 20, revolves around Alex (Horgan), a London literary agent who is just about holding her life together. Her teenage son Ruari (Aran Murphy), is emotionally unraveling and her actor ex-husband is moving to another country with a younger woman. Meanwhile, her best friend Sam (Sharlene Whyte)—who is also her boss—keeps trying to fix her up with older men, but Alex is still infatuated with Patrick (Rupert Friend), a rogue-ish Scot who seems more suited to a hookup than a long-term relationship.
